Race Report [2004 Results]
Last Sunday saw the Tenth Wansdyke Triathlon taking place at the South Wansdyke Sports Centre in Midsomer Norton. 330 competitors had registered for the event, that consists of a 400 metre pool swim, 25km bike ride and a 5 km run. Many of the competitors had done the event before and knew what they let themselves in for. Perhaps what they hadn’t bargained for was the hot weather with temperatures reaching 30?c The faster swimmers started at 8:45 and Stuart Curtis from the Bath Amphibians managed a 5:17 swim, not quite beating the course record of 4:30. The bike followed where Joe Beer, winner of the 1997 triathlon, managed the day’s best in 43:25 not quite beating Richard Marsh’s (Frome) course record of 41:11. Joe Beer now a well-knows magazine writer on sports nutrition kindly supplied us with a profile of the bike course [Click Here]
This Shows the sort of hills the competitors had to cope with on the bike
course, cyclists went round to Holcombe twice before returning via the White
Post to Radstock and the Sports Centre.
Once back the fun really started with a two lap run course to the top of
the hill behind the Sports Centre. The course is almost entirely off-road
and challenges even the most fit athletes. With the heat at full blast the
fasted run split was achieved by Daniel Lugsden from the Bath Amphibians
in 21:59. The run profile shows you the tremendous hill the runners had
to tackle [Click Here]
Overall winner was Stuart Curtis from the Bath Amphibians in a time of
1:12:03, first lady was Jane Fox from Chippenham Wheelers, who on her 3
attempt and coming second last year, came first this year in a time of 1:20:28.
On the junior front Sam Renouf (19) from Exeter, managed a second place
in 1:12:25
Nigel Cox handed out the trophies for the Avon and Somerset Police Triathlon
Championships in which Rich James came first in 1:20:03, Nigel Cox himself
just managed to keep away from his son Ryan(16) in times of 1:23:31 and
1:27:08.
The heat took its toll on the other competitors with just 264 competitors
finishing, but with many managing great achievements in finishing the race
and setting a personal best. After ten races there are now just a handful
who have competed in all 10 events clocking up an incredible at least 15
hours of competing!
